Robert ('69) and Joanna Kim
Robert Kim graduated from Waynesburg College in 1969 with a BS in Elementary Education. While a student at Waynesburg, Robert played basketball and baseball, was—as he put it—"persuaded" to wrestle, and was a member of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. He also worked in the dining hall and as an equipment manager for all sports to help his parents with tuition and board.
Originally from the west coast, his first time east of California proved to be a bit of a culture shock. Coming from a three-year high school of 3,500 students to an entire town of just 2,500 people was certainly an adjustment, but Waynesburg soon became his second home.
"Over the four years at Waynesburg, I made many —lifelong' friends, whom I frequently contact, and have reunited with at many Homecomings," Robert said. "It is something that I cherish most. Being from California, I was taken in by many families during holidays, and they became my family away from home."
After graduating from Waynesburg, Robert went onto the Peace Corps in the Philippines, where he taught teachers in science and physical education for three years. He was then hired as a curriculum developer/teacher for a new middle school physical education program at the International School in Manila. Upon returning to the United States, Robert became a flight attendant for American Airlines and flew for 36 years. He retired in 2010, and he and his wife, Joanna, now raise puppies for the blind/visually impaired through Guide Dogs of America.
In addition to their annual contributions to programs like Athletics, student scholarships and the Fund for Waynesburg, Robert and Joanna also chose to support Waynesburg through a planned gift.
Robert explained: "Waynesburg College has been such a large part of my education and life, and [with] the sacrifices my mom and dad made to send me 2,500 miles to school, I believe I owe it to their memory to support Waynesburg by including the University in our Living Trust. I hope the donations to the school will help students receive the best education there is at Waynesburg and prepare them with a wholesome and spiritual outlook on their future lives."
